Summary:
ADRB2 encodes the beta-2-adrenergic receptor, a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family. It forms a signaling complex with the L-type calcium channel Ca(V)1.2, G proteins, adenylyl cyclase, cAMP-dependent kinase, and PP2A phosphatase, ensuring rapid and specific signal transduction. In addition to its classical signaling role, ADRB2 can regulate alpha-synuclein transcription, a pathway implicated in Parkinson’s disease. The gene is intronless, and polymorphisms, point mutations, or downregulation are associated with nocturnal asthma, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
