Market Access & Reimbursement Strategy
InquiryOverview
Securing regulatory approval is only half the battle; the true success of an anti-obesity therapeutic lies in its availability to patients. In an era where limited reimbursement remains a significant barrier, Protheragen offers a specialized market access & reimbursement strategy service. We help sponsors navigate the fragmented global payer landscape, utilizing real-world evidence (RWE) and health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) to demonstrate that the long-term cost of untreated obesity, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, far outweighs the price of modern pharmacotherapy. Our mission is to transform your clinical success into commercial viability by ensuring your therapy is covered, accessible, and competitively priced.
Bridging the Gap, Securing Coverage - Strategic Market Access for Anti-Obesity Innovations
Protheragen provides the analytical tools and strategic intelligence needed to dismantle the reimbursement wall. We specialize in converting clinical outcomes into the value-based language required by public and private insurers.
Global Policy & Payer Mapping
We analyze the regulatory & reimbursement landscape across key markets to identify favorable entry points. This includes assessing the payer policy of government programs like Medicaid and private insurance plans. To support this, we integrate data from our:
HEOR & Market Support Service for Obesity Therapy
We develop economic models that support value-based pricing by analyzing cost-benefit ratios of drug therapies versus bariatric surgery. Our method assesses long-term health outcomes, cost savings, and quality of life to ensure alignment with payer expectations and market demands.
Post-Market & Real-World Study Service
We create detailed economic models that support value-based pricing by analyzing cost-benefit ratios between drug therapies and bariatric surgery. Our approach evaluates long-term health outcomes and cost savings, ensuring alignment with payer expectations and market demands.
Database Construction & Data Management Service
We build essential evidence repositories for responding to request for information (RFI) queries from health technology assessment (HTA) bodies. These repositories compile robust data and clinical outcomes, ensuring our responses are well-supported, timely, and tailored to HTA agencies' specific inquiries.
Pricing & Budget Impact Optimization
We conduct thorough budget impact analysis (BIA) to provide you with a clear understanding of a payer's willingness to pay for your therapeutic intervention. This analysis involves evaluating the financial implications of introducing your drug to the market and projecting its impact on payer budgets. By utilizing these insights, we develop tiered pricing strategies that effectively balance profitability with the necessity of broad patient access. Our aim is to ensure that your therapy is not only economically viable but also accessible to patients who need it the most, thus maximizing both market penetration and positive health outcomes.
Patient Support & Access Programs
For markets where coverage is limited or restricted, we design comprehensive patient support programs (PSPs) and co-pay assistance frameworks tailored to meet the unique challenges faced by patients. These programs are strategically developed to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder treatment adherence, thereby maximizing patient access to essential therapies. Our initiatives include educational resources, counseling, and financial assistance options that empower patients to navigate the complexities of their treatment plans. By removing these obstacles, we not only enhance patient compliance but also promote the overall effectiveness of your therapy in improving health outcomes.
Workflow
Protheragen employs a standardized, iterative workflow designed to align therapeutic value with payer expectations. Our methodology focuses on evidence-based negotiation and proactive policy engagement, ensuring that market access considerations are integrated into the early stages of development. By analyzing real-world prescription patterns and payer behaviors, we create a strategic roadmap that anticipates and mitigates reimbursement hurdles.

- Private Payer Engagement
Developing differentiation strategies for commercial insurance plans by showcasing superior real-world effectiveness in reducing high-cost events like heart attacks or strokes compared to standard care.
- Global Market Expansion
Navigating the specific regulatory and reimbursement hurdles of the EU, APAC, and North American markets, ensuring that local pricing reflects the regional therapeutic value and competitive environment.
- Comparative Cost-Benefit Analysis
Providing the economic proof required to show that pharmacotherapy is a cost-effective alternative or complement to bariatric surgery for specific patient cohorts, such as those with Type 2 diabetes.
Advantages

Title: Spending, utilization, and price trends for anti-obesity medications in U.S. Medicaid programs: an empirical analysis from 1999 to 2023
Journal: Frontiers in Medicine, 2025.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.3389/fmed.2025.1537181
Summary: This study presents an empirical analysis of the utilization, spending, and pricing trends of anti-obesity medications (AOMs) within U.S. Medicaid programs from 1999 to 2023. It highlights a substantial increase in AOM prescriptions, which rose from 13,855 in 1999 to 938,663 in 2023, marking a dramatic 6,674% rise. Correspondingly, spending on AOMs surged by over 77,805,466%, driven largely by the introduction of effective new medications such as Wegovy and tirzepatide. These findings underline the growing burden of obesity and illustrate the importance of developing equitable market access and reimbursement strategies to address rising treatment costs while ensuring patient access to effective therapies. The study emphasizes the need for policy measures that facilitate coverage and optimize reimbursement frameworks, aligning the clinical effectiveness of AOMs with payer expectations and enhancing their availability in the Medicaid framework.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why is reimbursement for obesity drugs often more limited than for other chronic diseases?
Historically, many payers viewed obesity as a lifestyle issue rather than a chronic disease. However, with modern RWE showing the prevention of diabetes and heart disease, this landscape is shifting. We help you provide the evidence needed to accelerate this shift.
-
How does BIA influence payer decisions for anti-obesity therapies?
A: BIA projects the financial impact of introducing a new therapy to a payer's budget. We use BIA to demonstrate that covering your anti-obesity drug is economically sustainable compared to the long-term costs of untreated obesity complications.
-
How does RWE help in reimbursement negotiations?
Clinical trials show what a drug can do, but RWE shows what it actually does in diverse populations. Payers prefer RWE because it reflects their actual member base, making your value claims more persuasive and reducing their perceived financial risk.
