This study explored the causal relationship between obesity and vitamin status. Subjects were placed on a low-energy diet (LED) for 8 weeks and tested for serum folate, retinol, vitamin B12 (VB12), vitamin D, and vitamin E. LED led to a 13% weight loss and an increase in serum folate, VB12, and vitamin D. Baseline adiposity was found to be associated with inflammation. The analysis revealed that LED led to a 13% weight loss and an increase in serum folate, VB12, and vitamin D. Baseline adiposity was positively correlated with inflammatory markers and inversely correlated with retinol and folate.
