Summary:
LZTFL1 encodes a widely expressed cytoplasmic protein that interacts with Bardet–Biedl syndrome (BBS) proteins to control ciliary membrane protein trafficking. Nonsense mutations result in BBS, a disorder featuring obesity, polydactyly, cognitive impairment, hypogonadism, and kidney abnormalities. LZTFL1 may also act as a tumor suppressor by regulating epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions through E-cadherin and actin cytoskeleton interactions.
