Summary:
KCNJ11 encodes an inward-rectifier potassium channel that forms part of the ATP-sensitive K⁺ channel complex in pancreatic β-cells. It regulates insulin secretion in response to metabolic signals and associates with the sulfonylurea receptor SUR. Mutations can cause hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy, neonatal diabetes, and contribute to type 2 diabetes, indirectly affecting body weight regulation. Multiple alternatively spliced isoforms exist.
