Description:
Bixin is a naturally occurring apocarotenoid discovered in Bixa orellana and functions as the primary chemical constituent of the commercial color additive annatto, possessing versatile biological profiles that include inhibiting the proliferation of MCF-7 breast, HeLa cervical, and A549 lung cancer cells with IC50 values of 14.38, 43.87, and 259.38 µM, respectively. At a dose of 10 mg/kg per day, bixin enhances cellular glutathione (GSH) levels and mitigates mercury-induced DNA damage in rat hepatocytes and leukocytes, whereas a dose of 200 mg/kg effectively reduces cutaneous photodamage from solar UV exposure in mice by activating Nrf2 transcriptional activity and upregulating GSH and glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (GCLM) expressions.
