Summary:
CEP19 encodes a centrosomal protein that localizes to centrosomes and primary cilia and co-localizes with markers of the mother centriole. The gene is located within a chromosomal region on human chromosome 3 that has been linked to severe obesity. Functional studies in mice demonstrate that loss of the CEP19 ortholog leads to morbid obesity, excessive food intake, glucose intolerance, and insulin resistance. In humans, pathogenic mutations in CEP19 cause morbid obesity and spermatogenic failure, emphasizing its role in metabolic and reproductive biology. A pseudogene corresponding to CEP19 is present on chromosome 2.
