Summary:
XBP1 encodes a basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor involved in the unfolded protein response. Under endoplasmic reticulum stress, XBP1 mRNA undergoes unconventional splicing mediated by IRE1, producing an active transcription factor that regulates genes controlling protein folding, secretion, and metabolic adaptation. The unspliced isoform functions as a negative regulator, enabling tight control of ER stress responses relevant to metabolic tissues.
