Summary:
PYY encodes a peptide hormone belonging to the neuropeptide Y (NPY) family. The precursor protein is proteolytically processed to yield two peptide forms that differ by three amino acids. Secreted by endocrine cells in the gut, these peptides bind to NPY receptors with distinct affinities and regulate pancreatic secretion, gastrointestinal motility, and energy homeostasis. Rare variants in PYY may increase susceptibility to obesity, and elevated circulating levels have been associated with anorexia nervosa.
