It serves as a central enzyme in the ketogenesis pathway, responsible for cleaving hydroxymethylglutaroyl-CoA into acetoacetate and acetyl-CoA. Ketogenesis is the process by which the body converts fat into ketone bodies as an energy source during starvation or low-carbohydrate diets. Therefore, HMGCL is critically important in this process. While HMGCL itself does not directly cause obesity, its activity as a key enzyme for the efficient utilization of fatty acids is closely linked to how the body processes and consumes fat.
