Summary:
CASP1 encodes caspase-1, a member of the cysteine-aspartate protease family that plays a dual role in apoptosis and inflammation. Caspase-1 is synthesized as an inactive proenzyme and undergoes proteolytic processing to generate an active heterodimer. It was initially identified by its ability to cleave and activate pro–interleukin-1β, a key inflammatory cytokine involved in immune responses, septic shock, and tissue repair. In obesity, CASP1-driven inflammasome activation contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
