CIDEC is a member of the cell death-inducing DNA fragmentation factor-like effector family, which is involved in the regulation of apoptosis. In adipocytes, the encoded protein promotes lipid droplet expansion and influences fat storage capacity. Its expression is insulin-responsive and positively associated with insulin sensitivity, suggesting a role in metabolic homeostasis. Mutations in CIDEC may contribute to insulin resistance and metabolic disease.
