Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay kit

Product Overview

Description: Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay kit is an antioxidant capacity assay kit that uses ferrous standards to determine the antioxidant content of a sample. Each kit provides sufficient reagents to perform up to 200 assays, providing a simple and efficient analytical method for assessing antioxidant status in response to disease, diet, or other physiological changes.
Assay Principle: In the assay, Fe3+ is initially reduced to the ferrous form (Fe2+) by an electron-donor antioxidant in the sample. The reduction of the Fe colorimetric probe complex produces a dark blue product that can be measured at 540-600 nm. Samples can be compared to iron standards to determine antioxidant potential.
Background: Oxidative stress is a physiological state in which there is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant concentrations. Under normal physiological conditions, cellular production of ROS can be counteracted by the action of cellular antioxidant enzymes, macromolecules or micromolecules, and other redox molecules. Excessive ROS accumulation leads to inflammation and cellular damage and has been implicated in the development of a variety of diseases, and it is essential to neutralize and remove excess ROS from cells in a timely manner through a variety of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Antioxidants are molecules that contain one or more free electrons that can be donated to stabilize ROS. They may be present transiently in different tissues or cells. It is essential to test for antioxidant capacity.
