Specification
Description:
Pyruvic acid assay kit (Colorimetric) is a metabolic assay kit for the rapid and sensitive detection of pyruvic acid in the range of 0.003-2.0 μmol/mL.
Background:
Pyruvate is the simplest of the α-keto acids, having a carboxyl group and a keto functional group. Pyruvate can be produced from glucose by glycolysis, converted to carbohydrates (e.g. glucose) by gluconeogenesis, or converted to fatty acids by reaction with acetyl-CoA. Pyruvate is also used to make the amino acid alanine and can be converted to ethanol or lactic acid by fermentation. When aerobic, pyruvate provides energy to the cell via the citric acid cycle; when anoxic, pyruvate is fermented to produce lactate.
Assay Type:
Quantitative assay
Assay Principle:
The reaction product generated by the reaction of pyruvic acid with the chromogenic agent is reddish brown in alkaline solution. The shade of color is proportional to the pyruvate content. Pyruvate content can be calculated by measuring the OD at 505 nm.
